Potato Please Tips: 15 Habits That Save Time

Fifteen Potato Please tips for cleaner peels, faster carrying, smarter upgrades and a quota run that does not stall.

Last Updated: 2026-11-05

The best Potato Please tips are not secret tricks. They are small habits that stop you from losing money: peel in short strokes, buy Carry Capacity before another knife, keep the chute clear, and do not buy a crane before the peelers can keep up. Each one saves a few seconds or a few potatoes, and the quota is built from both.

I pulled these from a full 1.0.1 playthrough and the live achievement data. None of them require a specific difficulty, and none of them depend on a hidden trigger.

Which habits save the most time?

  1. Buy Carry Capacity first. The first level costs $250 and removes trips. A larger load is worth more than a sharper knife in the opening hour because the walk is the real cost.

  2. Peel in short strokes. Long strokes dig into the potato. You lose money on waste and still have to finish the skin. Short strokes along the curve remove less flesh.

  3. Finish a potato before picking up another. Half-peeled potatoes clutter the board and get thrown by accident. One clean potato in the chute is better than three half-done ones on the table.

  4. Keep the chute clear. A full chute stops accepting potatoes even if your hands are clean. Clear it before you start a new sack, not after.

  5. Use the Steel Knife early. At $2.70 it is one of the cheapest upgrades in the game. The Rusty Knife is usable, but it produces rougher cuts and more waste.

  6. Do not buy the Wheelbarrow too early. It carries twelve sacks, but you will not have twelve sacks ready in the first hour. The $210 is better spent on the first Auto Peel Machine.

Which purchases actually remove work?

  1. Buy the Crank Peel Machine as a bridge, not a destination. At $20 it is cheap and it peels faster than the board, but you still turn it by hand. Use it to learn the feed-and-clear rhythm.

  2. Save for the $280 Auto Peel Machine. The first electric machine is the real automation unlock. Buy it as soon as you can keep it fed, not before.

  3. Add the Sack Gantry before the second machine. At $280 it sends full sacks to the emptiest peeler and removes a walk from every cycle. It is easy to skip because it does not look like a peeler.

  4. Skip the Claw Crane until the line is already moving. At $2,100 it moves sacks and piles, but it does not peel. If your bottleneck is the cutting board, the crane just gives you a better view of the queue.

  5. Buy Overclock only when every peeler is busy. At $1,400 it doubles the speed of every barrel. If the barrels are idle, the upgrade does nothing.

  6. Treat the Potato Vacuum as a late-game fix. At $2,800 it clears large spills and carries 1,000 potatoes, but it does not replace a peeler. Buy it when moving potatoes by hand is the bottleneck.

Which small habits prevent disasters?

  1. Close the door during the storm. Snow and cold cost more time than the walk to the terminal. If the outdoor pile freezes, use the flamethrower before you try to carry it.

  2. Use Repile before the pile collapses. A bridge or a hole in the potato mountain stops the machines from drawing a steady supply. R is faster than digging by hand.

  3. Check the Troubleshooting page after 1.0.1. Unstuck, Wheelbarrow, and Sack fixes now have a 60-second cooldown instead of five minutes. If a potato is stuck in the output lane, the fix is faster than it used to be, but prevention is still better.

The dog is not a machine

The puppy can help peel after you feed it, but the 1.0.1 patch changed the rule so dog-peeled potatoes no longer count as machine output. Do not build an achievement plan around the dog.

How do these tips change the first hour?

The first hour is mostly walking. Carry Capacity and the Kitchen Table reduce the number of trips between the sack, the board, and the chute. The Steel Knife reduces waste. The Crank Peel Machine reduces the time you spend at the board once you have a steady supply.

A first-hour shopping list that follows these tips looks like this:

Purchase Price Why now
Carry Capacity $250 Fewer trips before the first door
Steel Knife $2.70 Less waste on every potato
Kitchen Table $12 Larger board and auto launcher
Crank Peel Machine $20 Faster than the board
Auto Peel Machine $280 First real automation

That is about $565, but you do not need all of it before the first payment. Carry Capacity and the Steel Knife are the priority. The table and the Crank can wait until the first shift is paid.

When should you ignore a tip?

Every tip has a context. Carry Capacity is worth less if you are already running a fully automated line and never carry potatoes. The Steel Knife is worth less if you are chasing the Old School achievement and deliberately peeling by hand. The Wheelbarrow is worth more if you are on a long carry route with multiple machines.

The game also has a hand-tremor setting. If your aim is unsteady, raising the assistance is faster than fighting the knife. It does not change the quota or the achievements.

If you are following a speedrun route, some of these tips invert. A speedrun may skip the Kitchen Table and buy the first machine earlier. The speedrun route → explains those trade-offs. For a normal run, the habits above are the safe default.

FAQ

What is the single best Potato Please tip?

Buy Carry Capacity before another knife. The opening run is limited by trips, not by cutting speed, and the extra capacity pays for itself before the first machine.

Should you buy the Steel Knife or save for a machine?

Buy the Steel Knife. At $2.70 it is too cheap to skip, and cleaner cuts pay for it quickly. Saving for a machine while using the Rusty Knife costs more in waste than the knife costs.

Does the dog help with the quota?

The dog can peel potatoes after you feed it, but it is not a reliable automation source. The 1.0.1 patch also stopped dog-peeled potatoes from counting as machine output, so do not plan a Fully Automated run around it.

Are these tips valid on Hard mode?

Most are. Hard mode halves payment, so waste is more expensive and the Steel Knife matters more. The purchase order is the same, but the quota takes longer.
